Gluten-Free Apple Betty for Apple Month
October is Apple Month, and October 5 is National Apple Betty Day—a lovely reason to bring apples and warm spices into the kitchen. This MarshaSophia recipe layers five sliced apples with a cinnamon, nutmeg and clove crumble, then bakes it in a 9-inch pie plate.
A Little About Apple Betty
Apple Betty is an old-fashioned baked apple dessert, and recipes for it vary. Some versions layer apples with breadcrumbs; others use a flour-based crumble topping. This MarshaSophia version uses gluten-free all-purpose flour, cane sugar and cold butter for a spiced topping layered between and over the apples.
It’s a simple autumn dessert to serve warm at home and a lovely way to celebrate Apple Month.
Gluten-Free Apple Betty Recipe
Makes: 6 to 8 servings
Prep time: 20 minutes
Bake time: 45 to 50 minutes
Rest time: 10 minutes
Oven: 375°F (190°C)
Baking dish: 9-inch pie plate
Ingredients
Apple filling
-
5 medium apples, peeled, cored and sliced
-
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Flour crumble topping
-
1 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour
-
¾ cup cane sugar
-
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
-
¼ teaspoon salt
-
⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
-
⅛ teaspoon ground cloves
-
½ cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch pie plate.
-
Place the sliced apples in a bowl and toss with the lemon juice.
-
In a separate bowl, combine the gluten-free flour, cane sugar, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg and ground cloves. Add the cold butter and work it into the dry ingredients with your fingertips or a pastry cutter until coarse crumbs form.
-
Arrange half of the apples in the pie plate. Sprinkle half of the crumble evenly over the apples.
-
Layer the remaining apples over the crumble, then finish with the remaining crumble.
-
Bake for 30 minutes, until the apples are tender and the topping is golden. Cover the top of the Apple Betty with a piece of foil (to avoid excessive browning), then bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes.
-
Let the Apple Betty rest for about 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm.
MarshaSophia Baking Notes
-
Choose firm apples that hold their shape during baking. A mix of tart and sweet apples can create a balanced flavour.
-
Slice the apples evenly so they bake at a similar rate.
-
Check that your flour is labelled gluten-free, and avoid cross-contact during preparation.
-
Serve warm on its own or with your favourite topping.
